| Christmas Phone Review Blackberry Pearl Posted: 10 Dec 2010 05:10 PM PST Although the current Blackberry pearl is an update to a previously released phone, it is still competing for attention in the market of iPhone 4 and HTC Desire. And for good reason, the price and extras included in what appears to be an outdated phone. With the Blackberry pearl you are not going to get the Glamorous looks of the iPhone, or the blistering speed and tech of the HTC Desire. Then again you are paying a fraction of the price. And for that you will be using a fantastic crossover phone for exploring the world of Smartphone's. For your money you will get a 3.2MP camera, 64Mb of internal memory and now there is an expandable slot for an SD memory card for storing your pictures, music and videos. A lot of offers now come with a free 1GB SD card with them, which is excellent value for money. The OS looks old and hasn't changed much from its original Blackberry inception, it is not flashy or jaw drop beautiful. But, it is functional and will get you to everything you need quickly and efficiently. The Pearl isn't capable of a lot of the new functions of the current generation Smartphone's, though a lot of standard functions are lurking in there. There is a standard telephone keypad, which by Smartphone standards is incredibly outdated. And there is no touch screen either which is becoming something of a standard now. Yet again it just works, no frills, no special ability's. Just a good no nonsense handset with albeit limited Smartphone capability. If you are looking for a very reasonably priced upgrade phone to check out the basics of the Smartphone revolution you can't go wrong with the pearl. In fact, if you're just looking for a decent phone, take a look at this one. To find some more great value cheap mobile phones, visit www.dialaphone.co.uk and browse their deals available online. | Samsung Galaxy S: Visual cues. Posted: 09 Dec 2010 05:11 PM PST It is fantastic that Samsung have finally released a phone that can compete in the smartphone market. And make no mistake, although not without its flaws, the Samsung Galaxy S is definitely a more than capable competitor for the best handsets by Apple, RIM and HTC. But it is almost impossible not to notice that the Korean firm's latest offering appears to take more than a few design prompts from the iPhone 3G and 3GS – a design that even Apple have moved on from. The rounded plastic rear and metal frontal band are almost direct imitations, and the home button too is remarkably familiar. Even the rear-mounted camera occupies a similar position – a small point one that bears mentioning. The display and processing speed are absolutely the rival of the iPhone 4, but that is not the issue here, the Samsung on style alone feels half a step behind everybody else. In truth, this is far from the case. One cannot help but feel it a shame that Samsung's 4 inch SUPER AMOLED screen, 1 GHz processor, and 16GB internal hard drive aren't housed a bit more imaginatively, or at least a bit more substantially. Because even aside from the overly familiar looks, the build quality is a little flimsy. The SUPER AMOLED screen aside, the housing feels cheap and plasticky, and cannot make up for the insubstantial weight, which ends up working against the Galaxy: making it feel flimsy rather than manoeuvrable. Aside from anything else – and it bears mentioning that any suggestion the Galaxy S feels cheap is based only on feeling, as the quality is far from it – the looks just seem outdated, and this isn't helped by the near ubiquity of the iPhone. Samsung needed a phone that helped them to stand out from the crowd, but they only really managed half of the job.
